I avoided gear talk for years—until I upgraded.
This is a reflection on tools vs talent, why the FX3 changed how I move, and why mindset will always matter more than megapixels.
I used to judge people who obsessed over gear. Then I became one of them. I upgraded to the FX3, and I felt that little dopamine hit—like I’d levelled up. But here’s the thing: the first thing I shot with it? Mid.
Because I wasn’t thinking about the story. I was thinking about settings. Gear can help, but it can't replace your eye—or your taste. Once I got over the newness, I went back to shooting like I used to. Simple. Handheld. Fast. And the images came alive again.
So no, your gear doesn’t make you. But if it frees you up—if it lets you move the way your ideas want to move—then maybe it does. Just a bit.
